Wild World 06: Going Home Pt. 03

(Max POV)

A large, lazy yawn escapes me before my eyes even begin to open and I feel soft weight pressing in on me from all sides. The sight of the three odd women I've come to love greets me, with Noir still curled up on my right, Siren and her soft feathers nuzzle against me on my left and Annette laying just on the other side of Siren. I'm tempted to just lay in bed with them all but unfortunately, nature calls. I squirm out of the bed as gently as I can and grab a barely-intact pair of shorts on the way out.

I chuckle quietly as it dawns on me that eventually, I won't have a choice but go naked all the time like everyone else. Every last piece of clothing that came to this world with me has gotten worn down like every depiction of long-abandoned island castaways I'd ever seen. None of my books have any answers on how to make clothes from scratch, just how to repair them but that won't last forever if I can't get material.

A quick trip through the hill takes me outside, where I can see the little outhouse I dug a while back. I still get funny looks for my ideas sometimes but the antelope who moved nearby seemed onboard with this one and I've helped them create a few outhouses of their own. I rush in and feel relief as I finally empty my bladder. As usual, my mind starts to wander as I sit on the makeshift toilet seat and make sure that everything's out.

When I first came to this nameless world, I thought I was going to die alone and miserable in the cave I've since expanded and made my home. It never occurred to me that I would come across other people and definitely that those people wouldn't be human. Meeting Annette was when everything really changed for me. I had learn a whole new language, teach her mine, introduce the concepts of names and writing and so many other things that it's still a little dizzying to think about.

I thought I had made a friend but it was more than that without me even realizing it. We'd formed a bond with one another, through sex and through learning. I found out about my own superhuman strength and Siren crashed into our lives... It's hard to think about how it all started but somehow, now it's even harder to think of my life without it all. I used to dream about being back on Earth and spending time with my family but I haven't had one of those dreams since we all returned from the lion city.

I now have three women in my life who mean more to me than the air I breathe and I haven't even been here a year. At least, I don't think it's been a year yet. I know I've gone through at least two seasons but who knows if seasons work the same here as they did back on Earth? It doesn't really matter anyway. Even though I never saw my life heading this way, I don't think I'd change it for the world.

I let out a contented sigh as I do my best to clean myself before leaving the outhouse and making my way back to my little home on the hill, where my three mates are probably still asleep in bed. I smile as I think of them, the memories we've shared and the life we've yet to live together. I literally can't picture my future without them in it anymore and I want them to know that. An idea on how to show them just that strikes me as I enter the front room and I make a quick dash to see if they're all still asleep.

I can't help but smirk as I see they've come together to fill up the vacant spot I left on the bed, yet they haven't woken up. Hopefully I'll have enough to get together a little surprise for them. Back on Earth, I'd just run by a jewelry store and pick up a few inexpensive rings or something. Here on this world, I'm going to have to make it from scratch. I probably won't be able to find any gems or precious metals but I'm sure I can make something nice with some plants. It should be special though, something symbolic of my life here.

I go through the house and grab one of the duffel bags I came to this world in to hold whatever I feel would make for a good present. I make my way back to the front room with my bag slung over my shoulder and hear a slight sound. A light rain has started to drizzle down and like always, it reminds me of my very first day in this world. Suddenly, inspiration strikes me and I know exactly what I should collect first for my presents.

I step out of the cave into the rain and take a look at the clouds. They're already pitch black and I know that I need to do what I need to do quickly. If lightning strikes, the tree on the top of the hill I call home is going to be struck multiple times until the storm is over. I don't really know why the tree is so effective as a lightning rod but the blackened bark of it is hard enough to even withstand a good amount of my strength. It'll be the perfect basis for my primitive jewelry project.

I rush out into the light drizzle and head up the hill quickly. As always, the blackened, cracked tree is there like a guardian spirit on top of my home. I reach the trunk quickly and take a deep breath to let my power fill my body as I drop my duffel bag on the ground. A light super-strength hop later, I've landed on one of the top branches. It doesn't budge even a millimeter under my weight, so I brace myself against the tree as best as I can and start trying to push the branch I'm on downwards.

I apply more and more of my strength slowly, trying not to tear the branch off completely just yet. I just want to get it cracked and loose enough that I can rip it off from a more secure branch but the damn thing simply refuses to budge no matter how much muscle I put into it. It's completely ridiculous. I can bench press boulders and toss people a hundred feet in the air but I can't break this one stupid branch.

I growl and fill up my body with as much power as I can, then punch the base of the branch as hard as I possibly can. I feel every bone in my body vibrate and rattle and the entire tree shakes in place. Unfortunately, due to the rain, I can't keep myself steady and fall from the branch. I have no shame in the fact that I let out a very un-masculine scream but the sudden plop onto the wet ground is definitely kind of embarrassing.

My head is the last thing to hit the ground and as it slams down onto the dirt, something really hard hits my forehead and I cry out in pain. I also let out a few choice expletives, but let's not dwell on how much my head hurts right now. My vision blurs for a second as I pick myself back up but once I can focus again, I notice something incredible right where my head hit.

A gemstone, crimson red and shining with just a tiny hint of my blood is ever-so-slightly exposed in the dirt. I blink, just to make sure I'm not just seeing things, then scoop dirt away from the gemstone. I manage to dig up enough of it to pull the gemstone out, a little thing the size of a pill but much pointier. It's gorgeous and as I look back down into the dirt, I see that it's not the only one. There's at least five more from what I can see and I wonder just how many of these things rest under the tree. Hell, I wonder how many rest in the entire hill.

I don't know a whole lot about gems or rocks but I at least know enough to be able to tell that this thing isn't a ruby. I don't even think this kind of crystal exists back on Earth. The good news is that means I get to name it. Part of me wants to name it something sappy, like after my parents or grandparents but I know that would cause the anthros I live with to ask me about the names and I'm still homesick enough that I don't feel up to telling them yet.

I guess I'll just call them crimson crystals. For now, I just dig a little more until I can pull out three more of them. With four of the little crystals in hand, that's enough to make a piece of jewelry for every single member of my odd little family. They aren't wedding bands but I think they'll look fantastic if I can come up with a good idea for them. Maybe I should make necklaces or something.

I put three of them in one first and hold the last one up so I can get a better idea of how light might reflect in it. Unfortunately, the dark clouds have come overhead in a hurry and I can't really see much of anything even though it's about as bright as it's going to get for probably the rest of the day.

"Max?" I hear Siren's voice shout to me from a little ways away. I turn and see that she must have been on her way to the bathroom when she stumbled across me.

"Wait, Siren. Don't look!" I shout back.

I don't want to spoil the surprise of what I'm doing. Especially since there's a good chance that Siren will ask me why I feel the need to do such a thing. I grab my duffel bag from the ground and sling it over my shoulder. I stuff the three crystals in my closed fist as Siren starts moving towards me with a concerned look on her face. I don't get the chance to put the last one away.

Lightning shoots out of the clouds overhead and my heart freezes. I know it's headed my way, right towards the tree I'm only a couple of feet away from at this point and time slows down. The lightning heads my way and then the craziest thing I've ever experienced happens to me. The lightning actually arcs away from the tree, spins around my body and then gets sucked right into the tiny little crystal in my hand.

I don't even feel the tingle of a single jolt as the lightning disappears into the crystal but the intense light that rapidly expands from it painfully blinds me. I scream out in pain and hear Siren cry out my name as the entire world around me goes white. I can tell that I've lost my footing and I stumble around with the duffel bag still slung over my shoulder. I lose my grip on the little crystal in my hand and I can't even hear it drop as I stumble forward.

I take an angled step right around where I think the downhill slope begins on my hill and trip as I step right onto flat grass. The spots in my vision start to clear up and I see green grass right by my face. It seems even darker than it should with the clouds overhead and that's when I realize something insane.

I can't feel the rain anymore.

My head shoots up and my eyes behold a completely impossible sight. Just a tiny ways off in the distance are the lights of the city and I'm right smack in the middle of all-too-familiar park. I start panicking, breathing heavily as my heart pounds in my chest. I shoot up onto my feet without thought and try to catch my breath. As crazy as it is, it's actually happened.

I'm back home. I'm back on Earth."
